What better way to spend the holiday season than on a castle hotel tour through Ireland?
I spent the coziest time of the year doing exactly that, waking up in historic estates, walking misty grounds, and experiencing some of the most magical stays I’ve ever had. It truly felt like stepping into a storybook.
If you’re planning a trip to Ireland and want something unforgettable, these are three castle hotels to bookmark. Each one is completely different, but equally beautiful in its own way.
1. Dromoland Castle

Located about 20 miles northwest of Limerick, Dromoland Castle is the definition of a five-star Irish castle experience.
From the moment you arrive, everything feels elevated—the service is impeccable, the interiors are refined yet warm, and the surrounding grounds are absolutely breathtaking. The castle dates back to the 16th century and is easily one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in Ireland.
It recently completed the final phase of a €20 million renovation, perfectly preserving its historic charm while introducing modern luxury touches.
It’s also a dream for weddings and once you’re there, you’ll understand why.
Activities at Dromoland Castle:
- Falconry (a must-do experience)
- Clay pigeon shooting
- Horseback riding
- Fishing
- Archery
- Golf
- Walking + dawn-to-dusk nature trails
- Jogging trails
- Tennis
- Complimentary bicycles
- Go-karting
This is one of those stays you never forget.
2. Kinnitty Castle Hotel

Located in the heart of Ireland, about 90 minutes from Dublin, Limerick, and Galway, Kinnitty Castle feels like stepping straight into medieval Ireland.
This stay is less about polished luxury and more about authentic atmosphere and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
The castle dates back to 1209 and has been destroyed and rebuilt not once, but twice. Despite that, it still holds onto so much of its original character, with stone walls, antique details, and a sense of history in every corner.
Each room is completely unique in both design and size, and everything feels incredibly cozy—especially during the colder months.
There’s also a slightly eerie edge to it. The original castle at Kinnitty was built by the O’Carroll clan, and it’s said to have a haunted past… which only adds to the experience.
If you want something atmospheric, romantic, and a little mysterious, this is it.
3. Clontarf Castle Hotel

If you’re short on time but still want the castle experience, Clontarf Castle is the perfect option.
Located just two miles from the heart of Dublin and about five miles from the airport, it’s incredibly convenient while still feeling like an escape.
Dating back to 1837, the castle blends historic architecture with modern design beautifully. The rooms are stylish and updated, but you still get that classic castle feel throughout the property.
One of my favorite parts was the restaurant and bar—it’s so cozy, especially in the evening.
This is the ideal stay if you want something luxurious, unique, and close to the city.
There’s something so special about staying in a castle in Ireland, especially during the holiday season. It’s cozy, romantic, and feels like you’ve stepped into another era.
Whether you’re looking for full luxury, historic charm, or something convenient near Dublin, these three stays each offer a completely different kind of magic.
Save this for your Ireland itinerary, you’ll want at least one castle stay, trust me.
