Quick and Easy Halloween Slime Recipe For Kids – Party Ideas

My daughter has been obsessed with slime for a couple of years now. She’s forever watching YouTube videos about making slime at home, buying slime whenever she sees it in the shops, and basically just driving me crazy talking about slime. Can you relate, mamas? 😋

I’ve always been anti-slime myself. I mean, anything sticky that may cling to your carpet, hair and floors and that involves “wasting” household ingredients like washing-up liquid or flour…didn’t spark joy for me.

Buuuut, I completely changed my mind once I made slime myself!

Quick and Easy Halloween Slime Recipe For Kids

Because I’ve always been so anti-slime, sadly, I never really paid much attention to my daughter’s obsession. I thought it was an annoying fad, like hand-spinners or rainbow looms…

But since her passion for it hasn’t dwindled, I decided to actually find out more about it and buy the proper ingredients already, so she could make slime at home the correct way; instead of wasting countless days trying out poor internet recipes she sees on YouTube.

So off I went in search of the best slime to make. I found a perfect recipe online at the Kitchn site and it seemed easy enough.

Buying the ingredients was also quite straight forward. Most of the supplies came from my local craft store, and I popped into my pharmacy to buy the boric acid.

Boric acid sounds scary but it’s simply an anti-septic solution used in eye wash. My pharmacist knew exactly what I was asking for when I mentioned slime! 😁 And it only cost a couple of Euros for a pack (12/18 mg per ml) with 20 individual vials.

A lot of slime recipes online refer to “Borax”. These are not to be confused. Borax is a salt of Boric Acid. They’re NOT the same thing at all. You wouldn’t want to add Borax to your eyes, for instance!

I believe that making slime can be a great educational activity for kids. They can learn about the chemistry of the reaction taking place, the different elements involved and how to achieve the right conditions for making great slime.

As a  former chemical engineer, the whole slime-making process was already becoming really fascinating to me!

For this slime recipe you can use white or clear glue, but we used clear glue to achieve a sparkly, jewel-colored slime. I mean, if I’m gonna make slime, I might as well make it as pretty and as sparkly as I can, am I right?! 😋

And because Halloween is fast approaching, my daughter and I decided on typical Halloween colors and to add a couple of spooky touches (with the cauldrons and googly eyes) to make the slime more Halloween-worthy.

But my daughter (the resident slime expert) also tells me you can use small pompoms, little polystyrene beads and other “topping” to make the slime more tactile. So feel free to experiment and have fun with various add-ons!

This slime making recipe would make for such a fun party activity or funky decor for a Halloween party! But you could also change the colors used to suit a birthday party theme, for instance.

I must say, after making this Halloween slime I was hooked!

For me, the fascination comes from watching the chemical process in action, live before my eyes. Seeing the magic of a few humble ingredients reacting together so quickly and getting transformed into this tactile substance is truly addictive!

And I can now say I understand my daughter’s obsession with slime, a little better! 😁

And, if made correctly, slime is not as sticky as I thought! Who knew?!

PLEASE NOTE: Slime is NOT suitable for very young kids! And, although all the ingredients are perfectly safe to handle, you must always have an adult present when making slime!

Halloween Slime Recipe

Yield: 1 cup approximately

Quick and Easy Halloween Slime Recipe For Kids – learn to make this fun and pretty spooky slime for your Halloween party!

ingredients:

• All materials can be found at Cultura.fr in France
• 1/2 cup clear glue
• 1/2 cup water
• 1/2 tsp Baking Soda or Bicarbonate of Soda
• 1 tablespoon of Boric Acid
• Food coloring (liquid or gel) in orange, lime green and purple
• Glitter in orange, lime green and purple
• Googly eyes
• Mini Halloween plastic cauldrons to hold the slime
• Plastic wrap
• Air-tight jars or containers to store the slime

instructions:

How to cook Halloween Slime Recipe

1. In a bowl, add the water and the glue, then mix with a spoon to combine.
2. Add a few drops o food coloring and mix until fully combined.
3. Sprinkle on the glitter to your taste, then mix again.
4. Add the baking soda and immediately mix to incorporate it into the mixture.
5. Add the boric acid and keep stirring the mixture until the slime comes off the sides of the bowl. This only takes about a minute or so.
6. Start kneading it with your hands. If your slime still feels too sticky, you may need a few more drops of boric acid.
7. Place the slime in a clean bowl and cover with plastic wrap for about 5 minutes to let it harden a bit.
8. Transfer a little slime to mini Halloween cauldrons and add googly eyes.
9. When you’ve finish playing with it, you can store the slime in an air-tight container or jar for a few weeks.
