On Tuesday, well -known astrophysicist Professor Jayant Vishnu Narlikar died at the age of 86. He breathed his last at his home in Pune. He underwent hip surgery 2 weeks ago from which he was recovering.
Born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra
Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was born on 19 July 1938 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. His father Vishnu Vasudev was Narlikar Mathmetician and Theortical Physicist who was HOD in the Maths Department of Banaras Hindu University. His mother Sumati Narlikar was a Sanskrit scholar.
He did his early studies from Central Hindu Boys School in Banaras. Graduated in Maths from Cambridge University in 1959. In 1960, the Tyson medal for Astronomy. Smiths Prize was received in 1962 during medical studies at Cambridge.

Iucaa, Pune established
In 1972, Professor Narlikar returned to India and joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) where he contributed significantly to creating the Theiratical Astrophysics Group.
In 1988, the UGC i.e. University Grants Commission called him to establish IUCAA i.e. Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune. Pro. Narlikar developed it like Astrophysics and Astronomy’s Global Research and Teaching Center.
Bing Bang Theory was challenged
Professor Jayant Narlikar and Fred Hoyle gave the Hoyle-Nurlikar Theory of Gravity. This theory was directly challenging the Bing Bang Theory. It said that the Universe has no beginning and end. It has always been executing. Only continuously growing up. A new matter is constantly being created, but because the universe is spreading, the density is not changing. The Hoyle-Narlikar Theory was more intensively stronger than the Big Bang Theory.
At the same time, Big Bang Theory says that the Universe started with a hot-deen point about 14 billion years ago and since then the Universe has been spreading.

Despite retiring in 2003, he remained associated with IUCAA as Emeritus Professor. Apart from this, he also wrote several books of fiction and non-fiction.
