On May 23, the term of Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka of the Supreme Court was completed. His mother died 2 days before his last working day. Despite this, he gave 10 decisions on the last day.

Born on 25 May 1960, Justice Oka started his career in Thane District Court, his father Justice Srinivas. From Oka Chamber. On 29 August 2003, the Bombay was an additional judge of the High Court. In November 2005, his appointment became permanent.

On 10 May 2019, Oka was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. After this, in August 2021, he became Justice of the Supreme Court. His term was completed in May 2025.

Keeping separate ideology is not a crime- Justice Oka

A few days before their retirement, a bench of Justice Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan granted bail to former General Secretary of the banned Popular Front of India, Abdul Sathkar. In 2022, a RSS worker was accused in the murder of Srinivasan. With his decision, Justice Oka said that having a separate ideology is not a crime.

CJI Gawai termed the ‘statue of humility’

On the occasion of Farewell of Justice Oka, the Chief Justice of India said that he was always a judge to give priority to his work. Not only on the death of his mother, but also on the death of his father while being a judge in the Bombai High Court.

He told his colleagues to come to meet him in his chamber instead of going to his house to comfort him. CJI Gawai called him ‘patron of private freedom’, ‘firm judges’ and ‘statue of humility’.
