A 23-year-old fashion model allegedly died by suicide at her home in Gujarat’s Surat, police said. The incident occurred on the intervening nights of June 7 and 8 and the victim, Anjali Alpesh Varmora, had posted emotional statuses online before her death.

Anjali had been working as a freelance model for several years and was associated with various studios.

DCP Vijay Singh Gurjar told news agency ANI that Anjali had also attempted to contact her fiancee before the incident, who was unable to respond at the time.

“Anjali Alpesh Varmora tragically died at her residence during the night of June 7-8. She had been working as a freelance model for the past several years and was involved in fashion shoots, as well as textile and commercial modelling projects,” said Gurjar.

Her family told the police that she was engaged and had planned to marry this year, but the wedding was postponed until next year as her finance’s mother had died.

During the investigation, the fiancee told police that Anjali had not shown signs of stress.

Her family members were not at home at the time of the incident. Upon their return, they found the room locked from the inside.

“Investigators also noted that prior to the incident, Anjali had posted a few emotional status updates online, though none mentioned specific names. Authorities were continuing their investigation to understand the circumstances leading to the incident,” DCP Gurjar said.
