Mumbai and Pune have been witnessing heavy rainfall as the monsoon continues to advance after hitting Kerala on Saturday.
On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Maharashtra’s Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert is also in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and other districts.
The weather department also issued a warning for Mumbai on Monday morning, stating that thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, intense spells of rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places in the city over the next 3 to 4 hours.
On Monday morning at around 8:15 am, the IMD also said that a moderate spell of rainfall is likely to continue over Kerala, coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, south Jharkhand, north Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya during the next three hours.
From 6:00 am to 7:00 am, significant rainfall was recorded in Mumbai, with Nariman Point Fire Station receiving 40 mm, Grant Road Eye Hospital 36 mm, and Memonwada Fire Station 35 mm. Other notable rainfall figures included Colaba Fire Station (31 mm), C Ward Office (35 mm), and Byculla Fire Station (21 mm).
Parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, witnessed sporadic rain, while Mysuru, Kodagu and other districts experienced moderate rainfall. The schools and colleges have been closed in Mysuru and Kodagu.
Light rain was also observed in the eastern and western regions of the state. The southwest monsoon is expected to bring continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in Karnataka, especially in the coastal and ghat areas, between May 25 and 27.
NORTHERN STATES
Uttarakhand is expected to receive scattered to widespread rain until May 31, with isolated heavy rainfall on May 25 and between May 28–30. Himachal Pradesh may witness hailstorms and heavy rainfall on May 27, 28, 30, and 31. Thundersqualls are forecast across the region, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan during the week.
Dust storms with wind speeds up to 50 kmph are very likely in Rajasthan on May 25 and 26. A heatwave is expected to abate from May 28. However, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions may persist in isolated pockets of West Rajasthan on May 25–27 and East Rajasthan on May 25 and 26, along with warm nights in the western parts of the state.
WESTERN STATES
A well-marked low-pressure area over South Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining Marathwada and North Interior Karnataka is driving intense rainfall along the west coast. Over the next seven days, coastal Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain likely in some areas.
The IMD has also forecast thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, over Gujarat on May 25. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected across Marathwada and Gujarat from May 25 to 27, while very heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra through May 30.
SOUTHERN STATES
Kerala and Mahe are likely to see very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on May 25 and 26, with continued downpours until May 31. Similarly, Tamil Nadu (including Puducherry and Karaikal) is expected to receive extremely heavy rain in isolated areas on May 25 and 26, with heavy to very heavy rainfall persisting until May 29.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana are likely to experience scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) over the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in these areas, especially from May 25 to 29. Thundersqualls are also likely in South Interior Karnataka on May 25 and in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during May 27–29.
EASTERN, CENTRAL STATES
Scattered to fairly widespread rain is likely in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh until May 29, and in Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar until May 31. Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph are expected across the region, with thundersqualls over Madhya Pradesh and Bihar on specific dates.
Heavy rainfall is likely in Vidarbha (May 25–28), Chhattisgarh, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands (May 25–27). Very heavy rainfall is expected over Andaman & Nicobar on May 25 and 26, and in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on May 30 and 31.
NORTHEASTERN STATES
Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and winds (30–40 kmph) is forecast across the Northeast over the next seven days. Assam, Meghalaya, and the other northeastern states are likely to witness isolated heavy rainfall daily until May 31. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on May 28 and 29, and over Assam and Meghalaya on May 30 and 31.
