Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, known for her blunt remarks, stirred a row after she said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s head should be chopped off for failing to check the infiltration of illegal Bangladeshis into India.
Speaking to reporters in Bengal’s Nadia district, Moitra said border security was the responsibility of the Home Ministry and Amit Shah cannot shirk it and blame the TMC government for infiltration – a hot-button topic ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.
A video of Moitra’s interaction with reporters in Bengali has gone viral, inviting strong condemnation from the BJP. A complaint has also been filed against the Krishnanagar MP.
“He (Amit Shah) keeps saying infiltrators, infiltrators, infiltrators. The border is protected by forces that come under the Home Ministry,” Moitra said.
Both Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have repeatedly accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of facilitating infiltration from Bangladesh, alleging that the infiltrators were her key votebank.
The issue was raised by the Prime Minister during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, where he announced the setting up of a demography mission to deal with infiltration.
“On August 15, PM Modi said infiltrators are causing demographic changes. But even as he was saying this, his Home Minister, seated in the front row, was smiling and clapping,” Moitra further said.
“If there is no one to protect India’s borders, if people from another country are entering daily in the hundreds of thousands, eyeing our mothers and sisters, and grabbing our land – then firstly, Amit Shah’s head should be cut off and placed on the table,” the fiery Trinamool leader said.
